Barthes mythologies 19577/4/2023 ![]() ![]() As Barthes sees it, these myths must be carefully deciphered, and debunked. They express myths of success, well-being, and happiness. They are the fabrications of consumer society. Yet all around us, in pop culture, politics, mainstream media, and advertising, there are codes and symbols that govern our choices. ![]() ![]() We decide to like or not, to believe or not, to buy or not. We have access to boundless information and prodigious quantities of stuff. We own devices that bring the world to the command of our fingertips. There is no more proper instrument of analysis of our contemporary myths than this book-one of the most significant works in French theory, and one that has transformed the way readers and philosophers view the world around them. "No denunciation without its proper instrument of close analysis," Roland Barthes wrote in his preface to Mythologies. ![]()

This is a project in which thinkers as far back as Galileo were engaged, as shown in Galileo’s discussion of science and scripture. Since the growth of modern science, many thoughtful believers have inquired more deeply into the articles of their faith in an attempt to reconcile them with what scientific discoveries have taught us about material reality, in the conviction that all truths are complementary. In Quest of the Historical Adam: A Biblical and Scientific Exploration, by William Lane Craig (421 pages, Eerdmans Publishing Company, 2021)īoth religion and science originate in the innate desire of human beings to know the truth, to discover the deeper order and purpose in the universe. In his new book, William Lane Craig has made an important contribution in the effort to combine faith and reason to shed some light on these great mysteries. ![]() The question of human origins surely ranks high on the list of theological topics, touching on the deepest questions of who we are, where we came from, and where we are destined. ![]() ![]() ![]() Hall received praise from critics, readers, and her fellow mystery writers. In earlier instalments, perhaps particularly the first book, he had a tendency of diffusing all tension by basically skipping all the most exciting parts and summarising them after the fact. ![]() In other words, this instalment is rife with excitement, and it has been the most enjoyable of Stackpole’s books so far. On a third front Warlord Zsinj is making his bid for power, striking at their convoys. Simultaneously, Kirtan Loor, secreted away in the city, is striking at the New Republic with his Palpatine Counter-insurgency Front, destroying, among other things, bacta reserves, invaluable in curing the Krytos virus. The Krytos virus, engineered on Ysanne Isard’s orders, is attacking the non-human population of Coruscant, and the death toll is staggering. In the third instalment of the “Rogue One” series, the New Republic must do battle on many fronts. You do get a little better, though, I’ll give you that. ![]() ![]() The Persistence of Memory, is a richly written story told from the first person point of view of the main character Daniel. ![]() Well, I now have a new series of hers to follow. I am that fearful of being without a Jordan Castillo Price book in my favorite series. It is no secret I am a huge fan of her Psycop series, my fanship is such that I am purposely holding back from reading the last published book in that series, GhosTV, until the next in the series is published. Is it some quirk of the circuitry, or is Daniel's desire to connect with someone clouding his own memory? Now even his own equipment has turned against him, reminding him he hasn't had a date in ages by taunting him with flashes of an elusive man in black that only he can see. ![]() So shouldn't they be able to figure out a way to overwrite the persistent false memory that's wreaking havoc on both of their lives? Daniel thought he was holding it together, but the situation is sliding out of control. These two both as individuals and together as a couple had the potential for more depth and darkness. Personally, I would have liked to have seen more relationship development between Harley and Marlowe. It was very insta-love with the entire book taking place over one weekend. That said, I felt that this one was maybe a tad undeveloped. The plot was engaging and kept me turning the pages. It was a quick read that took me around three hours to finish. I found this one to be well written and well paced. And to say I am super excited to read about these other twisted would be the understatement. Miz Hensley has quickly written her way into occupying a prime spot at my "Favorite Authors" table. Everything about these books from the up characters to the fabulous New Orleans setting checks every one of my boxes. ![]() At first sight by nicholas sparks7/3/2023 ![]() ![]() This book begins with Jeremy moving to Boone to be with Lexie (his fiancé now).
