Serious moonlight jenn bennett7/6/2023 I have a couple of auto-read authors when it comes to contemporary fiction and jenn bennett is on that list. To uncover the writer’s puzzling identity, Birdie must come out of her shell…discovering that the most confounding mystery of all may be her growing feelings for the elusive riddle that is Daniel. Daniel also shares her appetite for intrigue, and he’s stumbled upon a real-life mystery: a famous reclusive writer-never before seen in public-might be secretly meeting someone at the hotel. The hotel’s charismatic young van driver shares the same nocturnal shift and patronizes the waterfront Moonlight Diner where she waits for the early morning ferry after work. In her new job, Birdie hopes to blossom from introverted dreamer to brave pioneer, and gregarious Daniel Aoki volunteers to be her guide. But her solitary world expands when she takes a job the summer before college, working the graveyard shift at a historic Seattle hotel. Raised in isolation and homeschooled by strict grandparents, she’s cultivated a whimsical fantasy life in which she plays the heroic detective and every stranger is a suspect. Mystery-book aficionado Birdie Lindberg has an overactive imagination. After an awkward first encounter, Birdie and Daniel are forced to work together in a Seattle hotel where a famous author leads a mysterious and secluded life in this romantic contemporary novel from the author of Alex, Approximately. Witches by rosalyn schanzer7/6/2023 With a powerful narrative, chilling primary source accounts, a design evoking the period, and stylized black-white-and-red scratchboard illustrations of young girls having wild fits in the courtroom, witches flying overhead, and the Devil and his servants terrorizing the Puritans, this book will rivet young readers with novelistic power. The riveting, true story of the victims, accused witches, crooked officials, and mass hysteria that turned a mysterious illness affecting two children into a witch hunt that took over a dozen people’s lives and ruined hundreds more unfolds in chilling detail in this young adult book by award-winning author and illustrator Rosalyn Schanzer. He grimly announced the dire diagnosis: the girls were bewitched! And then the accusations began. The doctor tried every remedy, but nothing cured the young Puritans. In the little colonial town of Salem Village, Massachusetts, two girls began to twitch, mumble, and contort their bodies into strange shapes. Tackling the same twisted subject as Stacy Schiff's much-lauded book The Witches: Salem, 1692, this Sibert Honor book for young readers features unique scratchboard illustrations, chilling primary source material, and powerful narrative to tell the true tale. Shazam geoff johns gary frank7/6/2023 He said, “Oh, my God, I’d kill to do that,” so I was like, “Okay! Let’s do it!” That was it. I talked to Dale, we were just talking, and I was telling him about Shazam. Dale Eaglesham, when we were working together on Justice Society of America, there was an issue where it was just about a pancake breakfast at a firehouse, and that’s one of my very favorite issues that we did, because of that emotion. It’s got to be such a distinct book on the stands. I only wanted to do the book if I could partner with someone who was going to bring that emotional, whimsical, superhero look to it. Gary brings such a wonderful emotional quality to all his work, but especially with Shazam, he captured those kids so well. I’d been wondering who would take over from Gary Frank on that project now that he’s busy with Doomsday Clock. Dale Eaglesham on Shazam is one of my favorite pieces of comic news so far this show. The paris apartment lucy7/6/2023 Naturally, she’s determined to figure out what went down-Ben is many sometimes sketchy things but she doesn’t believe he would have bailed on her so completely-a quest that may end up putting her in more danger than she could have ever predicted.įeeling a bit like a darker take on Only Murders in the Building, The Paris Apartment revolves around the residents of number 12, rue des Amants, shifting between the perspectives of several different characters as Jess tries to get a handle on what’s happening and who her brother was to all these people. When Jess Hadley arrives in Paris to visit her half-brother Ben (and escape an uncomfortable personal situation of her own in London), she’s surprised that he’s is nowhere to be found and that none of the neighbors in his swanky new building are terribly concerned about what’s happened to him. Arriving in the dark days of February, Lucy Foley’s The Paris Apartment nevertheless feels like the most entertaining sort of summer thriller, a fast-paced, twisty bit of escapism that mixes compelling, messy characters, deft narrative red herrings, shifting perspectives, and a few genuine surprises to create a story that’ll keep you up reading well into the night. The life of equiano7/5/2023 The Interesting Narrative gained renewed popularity among scholars in the late 20th century and remains a useful primary source. His 1789 autobiography, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, helped secure passage of the British Slave Trade Act 1807, which abolished the slave trade and sold so well that nine editions were published during his life. Equiano was part of the abolitionist group the Sons of Africa, whose members were Africans living in Britain and he was a leader of the anti-slave-trade movement in the 1780s. He was sold twice more before purchasing his freedom in 1766.Īs a freedman in London, Equiano supported the British abolitionist movement. Enslaved as a child in Africa, he was shipped to the Caribbean and sold to a Royal Navy officer. 1745 – 31 March 1797), known for most of his life as Gustavus Vassa ( / ˈ v æ s ə/), was a writer and abolitionist from, according to his memoir, the village of Essaka in modern southern Nigeria. The selection novel7/5/2023 Like any good teenage boyfriend, Aspen has an irrational and overly emotional response-despite the fact that it was his suggestion-and breaks things off with America. Realizing this, Aspen asks America to apply to the Selection, assuming she won't be chosen. If America marries him, she'll be even more broke than she is now. There's just one problem, however: Aspen is a Six. This hormone-addled pair frequently meet in America's tree house at night, and things are so hot and heavy that they're even talking marriage. That reason? Aspen, America's secret boyfriend. America's mom really wants her to apply, but America refuses for some reason…some sweet, hunky, sensitive reason. Unsurprisingly, not everyone loves this system, and there are several rebel groups trying to overthrow the government.Īmerica has just received a letter inviting her to take part in the Selection, a reality show competition in which 35 young women are brought to the palace to fight for Illéa's prince's heart. Illéa has a numeric caste system that ranges from One to Eight: America and her family are Fives, which means that (a) they're pretty poor, and (b) they're required by law to be artists or musicians, even if they're no good at it or want to be something else. America Singer is an average sixteen-year-old girl-or as average as you can be in the country of Illéa, which was formed out of the remnants of the United States following World War III. The game book monica hughes7/5/2023 Looming disaster pushes the plot forward at a compelling pace, but Hughes (The Crystal Drop, 1993, etc.) drains excitement from such pivotal moments as Walt's departure from Earth and the initial meeting with the Greenies, both presented in a straightforward, anticlimactic manner. Walt's accidental fall into a hidden cave leads to a meeting with Aqua's telepathic amphibious lifeforms, nicknamed ``Greenies.'' When Walt learns that tidal waves are about to sweep over the entire planet, he and his pal Solveig must convince the colony to evacuate. Walt's hero-worshipping fantasies fade beneath the barrage of beatings from classmates and his sadistic father's lack of interest. Raised on Earth by a doting aunt, Walt is completely unprepared to join his father, famed terraformer Colonel Angus Elliott, on the planet Aqua. The spiritual metamorphosis of a boy into a man is juxtaposed with the transformation of a pacific planet in this intergalactic thriller. Theocracide by James Wymore7/4/2023 Until his artificially perfect world comes crashing down. Until the government discovers his father's secret. As long as they ignore the constant barrage of terrible news, their lives would turn out to be perfect. With a sports scholarship and an amazing new girlfriend, he leads his college team from one victory to another. Jason, like everyone else, lives in a fantasy facilitated by computer glasses that project images right over the parts of the world he doesn't like. The Undying Emperor is drafting Americans of all ages despite the plummeting population. Epidemic alien-flu leaves people afraid to go outside their homes. Wymore is able entertain philosophical debates about religion, politics, morality and liberty throughout the telling of THOECRACIDE without taking away or distracting from the story." -Tiffini McKnight (Waldron Books) About the Book: Aliens bent on conquering the world are closing in on a weakened America. Praise for Theocracide: "The world Wymore has created is interesting, smart, and a little scary because it's so believable. Ottessa moshfegh eileen review7/4/2023 Well, it has been three weeks and I still don’t feel any better about it. I read Eileen by Ottessa Mohfegh a few weeks ago and I wanted to wait to see if I felt any better about it rather than diving right into a review that might seem harsh or unfair. It has taken me a while to write this review. But soon, Eileen’s affection for Rebecca will pull her into a crime that far surpasses even her own wild imagination. When the beautiful, charismatic Rebecca Saint John arrives on the scene as the new counsellor at the prison, Eileen is enchanted, unable to resist what appears to be a miraculously budding friendship. In the meantime, her nights and weekends are filled with shoplifting and cleaning up her increasingly deranged father’s messes. Trapped between caring for her alcoholic father and her job as a secretary at the boys’ prison, she tempers her dreary days with dreams of escaping to the big city. The Christmas season offers little cheer for Eileen Dunlop. |
